Monterey Bay Aquarium is a leading marine science center located on Cannery Row in Monterey. It opened in 1984 on the site of a former sardine cannery and has become one of the most visited aquariums in the United States. The aquarium is known for its large Open Sea exhibit, which features sharks, sea turtles, and schools of tuna swimming in a massive tank. Its Kelp Forest exhibit recreates a real California coastal ecosystem with towering kelp and local marine life. The institution is also active in ocean conservation, seafood sustainability programs, and marine research. With millions of visitors each year, it plays an important role in education and protection of the oceans.

The webcam shows the Sea Otter Exhibit, where rescued southern sea otters are active throughout the day. Live from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific Time, viewers can watch them romp, tumble, wrestle, and swim in their habitat. The otters take part in enrichment activities using artificial kelp, floating ice, and other toys that help keep them healthy and mentally stimulated. Scheduled feedings at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. PT give viewers a chance to see them up close during mealtime. All of the female otters featured on the cam are rescued and cannot return to the wild due to health or behavioral reasons. Beyond entertaining guests, they serve as important ambassadors for their species and even act as surrogate mothers for stranded sea otter pups.
