Salt Lake City Railroad
Salt Lake City is one of the most important railroad hubs in the western United States, where several major freight and passenger routes meet. Union Pacific Railroad operates the main freight network through the city, connecting Utah with California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Midwest. The historic Grant Tower area was once a key junction for the Denver & Rio Grande Western, Western Pacific, and Union Pacific railroads. Today the rail corridor carries heavy freight traffic, including intermodal trains, manifest freights, and local industrial service. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops in Salt Lake City on its route between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is also served by Utah Transit Authority FrontRunner commuter trains, making the railroad network important for both freight transportation and daily passenger travel.
The webcams are mounted on the Utah Arts Alliance campus and overlook the busy Grant Tower rail junction where three Union Pacific Subdivisions meet the Utah Transit Authority FrontRunner corridor. The cameras regularly capture Union Pacific manifest freights, BNSF intermodal and freight trains, Utah Railway local service, Amtrak's California Zephyr, and FrontRunner commuter trains passing through the junction. Because the site is connected to the Salt Lake, Lynndyl, and Provo Subdivisions, viewers can see a constant flow of rail traffic entering and leaving Salt Lake City. Unusual locomotives from Canadian National, Norfolk Southern, CPKC, and CSX occasionally appear, adding extra variety for train enthusiasts.
