Kearney sits along the Union Pacific Railroad mainline, which is one of the busiest freight corridors in the United States, connecting the Midwest to the West Coast. The area sees a mix of freight traffic, including agricultural products, manufactured goods, and intermodal trains carrying containers. Historically, Kearney developed around the expansion of the Union Pacific in the 19th century, which helped the city grow as a commercial and transportation center. In addition to freight, the line also carries Amtrak's California Zephyr, which stops in Kearney, providing passenger rail service across the country. The Kearney rail infrastructure includes main tracks, sidings for train meets and passing, and connections to smaller branch lines serving local industries. Today, the rail network is vital for both the economy of Kearney and the broader regional logistics of Nebraska and the Midwest.

The live camera overlooks Union Pacific's Kearney Subdivision, part of the original Transcontinental Railroad–also known as the Overland Route. There are two fixed views: one looking east toward Omaha and the other west toward North Platte, right at milepost 188.8. Viewers can watch up to 80 daily freight trains navigating three main tracks–Main 1, Main 2, and Main 3–as well as sidings serving local industries like The Andersons grain silo. Trains include manifest, intermodal, and local freights, with westbound traffic heading toward Bailey Yard in North Platte, the world's largest rail yard, where locomotives are refueled, crews swapped, and trains reconfigured.
