Alishan is a famous mountain area in Taiwan, known for its cool climate, misty forests, ancient cypress trees, and dramatic sunrises above a sea of clouds, while the Alishan (Aliahan) Forest Railway is a legendary narrow-gauge mountain line running from Chiayi to Alishan at over 2,200 meters above sea level, built in the early 20th century as a remarkable engineering achievement. Using spiral loops, switchbacks, tunnels, and tight curves, the railway overcomes extremely steep terrain in the Central Mountain Range and is considered one of the most spectacular mountain railways in the world. The main Chiayi–Alishan route is complemented by scenic branch lines such as Zhushan, Shenmu, and Zhaoping, which serve forest trails and viewpoints inside the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. Trains are usually heritage diesel locomotives with classic or wooden-style carriages, moving slowly through bamboo groves, subtropical valleys, and high-altitude cloud forests. As the elevation rises, the scenery changes dramatically, offering passengers constant views of deep ravines, bridges, and layers of forest wrapped in fog.
