Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal

The Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal is a man-made waterway in Door County, Wisconsin that cuts through the Door Peninsula. It connects Green Bay with Lake Michigan, giving ships a shortcut instead of sailing around the peninsula. It was built in the late 1800s and later improved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The canal is an important route for Great Lakes freighters transporting commercial goods. Breakwaters and lighthouse structures guide vessels safely through both entrances. Today it is also a popular spot for watching ships and enjoying lake and shoreline views.

The webcams at the Door County Maritime Museum are two live views positioned at the museum overlooking the Sturgeon Bay waterway. One camera is aimed south toward the Bay View Bridge, showing boats passing, marina activity, and the working ship canal traffic moving between Lake Michigan and Green Bay. The second camera faces north toward the Historic Sturgeon Bay Bridge (also called the Michigan Street Bridge), giving a clear view of the iconic 1931 rolling-lift bascule bridge and vehicles crossing it. Together, the two streams capture both directions of the busy canal from the same waterfront point. The view often includes freighters, smaller recreational boats, and occasional bridge openings for passing vessels. These webcams are popular for watching real-time maritime activity and the operation of one of Wisconsin's key historic bridges and shipping routes.
