The Venetian Lagoon is a vast, shallow bay in northeastern Italy, separated from the Adriatic Sea by a chain of narrow barrier islands that form a natural boundary between the sea and the mainland. Covering around 550 square kilometers, it features a dynamic landscape of tidal flats, salt marshes, and winding channels shaped by the constant movement of water and sediment. At its heart lies the historic city of Venice, built on more than 100 small islands and connected by canals and bridges that define its unique character. The lagoon plays a crucial role in protecting Venice from the sea, although it is increasingly affected by seasonal flooding known as “acqua alta.” In addition to its cultural importance, it is a rich ecological environment that supports a wide variety of bird species, fish, and plant life adapted to brackish conditions. As part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Venetian Lagoon represents a remarkable balance between human history and a fragile natural ecosystem.

The webcams observe the Venetian Lagoon giving viewers a live look at one of the most famous waterways in the world. They show constant movement of boats, water taxis, gondolas, and ferries traveling across the lagoon and connecting different parts of the city.
