Sisimiut Airport (JHS) is a small regional airport located about 4 kilometers northwest of the town of Sisimiut in central-west Greenland. It opened in 1998 and plays an essential role in connecting the community with other towns across Greenland. The airport has one asphalt runway, 799 meters long, suitable for short take-off and landing aircraft commonly used in Arctic conditions. It is operated by Mittarfeqarfiit and mainly served by Air Greenland, offering domestic flights to destinations like Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq. Due to its coastal setting and surrounding mountains, flights are often influenced by changing Arctic weather conditions, adding to the airport's unique character.
At Sisimiut Airport, the webcams offer stunning views of the surroundings – one facing southwest and the other southeast. The southwest webcam shows the runway stretching toward the rocky coastline and the calm waters of Kangerluarsunnguaq Bay, where the Arctic light reflects beautifully on clear days. The southeast view reveals the rugged mountains that rise behind the town of Sisimiut, with snow-covered slopes in winter and green tundra in summer, creating a dramatic natural backdrop for aircraft movements. From these webcams, viewers can see small turboprop planes and short take-off aircraft, which are common in Greenland.
