Skykomish is a small town in Washington State, located along the Skykomish River in the Cascade Mountains. It is known for its historic charm, outdoor recreation opportunities, and scenic mountain views. The town developed in the late 19th century as a key hub for the Great Northern Railway, supporting logging, mining, and transportation. Skykomish Railroad refers to the rail line that passes through the town, historically part of the Great Northern Railway's route over the Cascades. This railroad played a crucial role in connecting Seattle with the eastern parts of Washington and beyond, carrying both freight and passengers. Today, the Skykomish area remains a point of interest for rail enthusiasts and hikers exploring the surrounding wilderness.
The Cascadia Inn hosts a webcam that looks out over BNSF Railway’s Scenic Subdivision, the former main line of the Great Northern Railway crossing Stevens Pass. The camera is located at milepost 1732.3 in this historic railroad town. It provides live views of frequent freight trains as well as Amtrak's Empire Builder, with westbound train №7 traveling through in the morning and eastbound train №8 in the evening. Across the street, the Great Northern & Cascade Railway features 7½-inch gauge train rides and educational exhibits for visitors. This webcam is an excellent way to watch both historic and modern rail operations in a scenic mountain environment.
