The Alaska Railroad is a rail line that runs about 470 miles(around 756 km) from Seward to Fairbanks. It was built in the early 20th century and helped connect communities across Alaska. The railroad carries both passengers and freight throughout the year. It links coastal areas with the interior and passes through forests, rivers, and mountain regions. Anchorage is the main hub of the Alaska Railroad and the location of its headquarters. From Anchorage, trains travel south to Seward and Whittier along Turnagain Arm. Northbound trains go to Denali National Park and Fairbanks. The Alaska Railroad Depot in downtown Anchorage serves as the central station for departures and arrivals.

The webcam overlooks the Anchorage Yard of the Alaska Railroad. Viewers can watch switching crews, intermodal container staging, and passenger coach storage areas throughout the day. The camera also shows the diesel locomotive shop and occasional military trains traveling to and from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Anchorage is the headquarters of the state-owned Alaska Railroad, where about 60% of revenue comes from freight and the rest from passenger and excursion services. The yard supports operations along the route from Seward to Fairbanks, including trains that pass through Denali National Park.
