Dam Square in Amsterdam is arguably the heartthrob of this Dutch capital. Situated about 5 minutes away from Centraal Station, the square is one of the busiest parts of Amsterdam with a jostling blend of locals and foreigners to show for it. The history of the Square dates back to the 13th century when a reservoir was built around Rive Amstel to stave off occasional flooding of the city from the waters of Zuirdee Sea.
